The way I see it, Scion can go two ways:

Continue down the path to please millennials.

Turn into Toyota’s “performance” brand.

People who buy their first car most often won’t buy new, but will get a used Camry or Civic. What does that mean? They want something that is inexpensive, cheap to insure, inexpensive, practical, and inexpensive. Being the world’s largest auto company, Toyota can easily pull this off by making and selling, say, a ~$10,000 car with limited luxuries, lotsa safety, and sits in a low insurance group.

This is- maybe- the Scion iA, and... That’s it. The tC is expensive to insure, and the FR-S is just expensive.

Now, they can go “performance” by keeping the FR-S, maybe making the tC more competitive against the Civic Si, and just making all their models better “performance” cars.

The way it is now, they’re mixing these two and making a mess of it. They need to do either one or the other, not both.

In ~2012, VW’s updates to the GTI put it in an awesome insurance group over in the UK because of its technologies (I don’t know about here). If Toyota wants to run economical cars on FWD platforms, throwing in a superbly engineered LSD that prevents understeer is the kind of thing that pleases everybody. Also, Scion’s advertising is horrendous. I never see ads for Scion, but I’m bombarded by Toyota Camry commercials.

I consider myself to be an avid car enthusiast that appreciates all makes/models etc. I just can't for the life of me get behind any product with a Scion badge on it. For the longest time this was simply because their "tuner friendly" cars brought nothing to the table, but now they do have the FR-S. Sadly, the brand has ruined it for me, I'd much rather have a BRZ than an FR-S though in truth neither are really my cup of tea.

In my opinion Toyota should kill Scion, make TRD variants of their own cars that are more than a badge or minor bolt-on upgrade affair, and be done with it.
